Association of Speech Therapists in Private Practice
Speech Therapy

Why Independent Therapy?

Many people prefer private medical care for the flexibility it offers. Independent speech and language therapists can usually offer an appointment for assessment without delay, followed by therapy to suit the client. Many therapists will carry out assessment/therapy in schools, homes or hospitals if required.

Since October 2000 all therapists offering speech and language therapy in the UK must be registered with the Health Professions Council. The profession has titles protected by law and these are:

  • Speech and Language Therapist
  • Speech Therapist

Registered therapists have completed recognised training and are committed to ongoing professional development. You can check a practitioner's current registration status - you will find links on this website to do this.

Some independent therapists offer specialisation in specific areas.
